GETTING STARTED

Without wasting much of your precious time , here are steps that are involved in creating a WordPress website

  • Choose a website platform (WordPress.com or WordPress.org)
  • Define the goal of your website
  • Choose a domain name and Hosting package
  • Install wordpress
  • Choose a website Layout
  • Create essential pages and Posts
  • Choose a desired theme and Customize your website
  • Install the basic and neccessary Plugins

CHOOSE A WEBSITE PLATFORM

Bear in mind that WordPress is of two types: WordPress.com and WordPress.org. I know that you might be wondering which one to choose. WordPress.org is the popular open source software that powers over 43% of all websites on the internet, and it is self-hosted software because you will need to get your own hosting and domain name, then pay the fees, whether monthly or yearly as the case may be. WordPress.org gives you the freedom to control your website; you can install any plugin and theme you desire out of millions of themes made available to you. This means that you are responsible for hosting, updates, and also maintenance of your websites. I highly recommend wordpress.org to anyone who wants to get started creating their WordPress website and can also afford the hosting and domain fees.

On the other hand, WordPress.com is a hosted service or hosting service that uses the WordPress.org software. It has a free plan and offers limited functionality; this means that you cannot customize it just like you do in wordpress.org. The paid plans give you those features, like installing plugins and themes. As a beginner, I would recommend you to start with wordpress.com. When your business has grown and you have made enough money, you can then switch over to wordpress.org.

For the purpose of this article, I will focus on creating a website with WordPress.org and show you the exact process that it requires.

DEFINE THE GOAL OF YOUR WEBSITE

This is the most important step—defining the goal of your website. When you define the goal of your website, you will have the confidence to put in the right contents for the people that will need it. Failure to define your website goal will result to wasted time and resources and also a website that does not serve its purpose. There are different goals for different websites example

Your website goal might be different. Here’s what different types of websites typically focus on: A business website has a goal which is to collect leads; Online store has a goal which is to make sales; an affiliate website has a goal which is to promote affiliate products; a Membership website has a goal which is to restrict contents; Education website has a goal which is to teach skills; a blog has a goal which is to share useful content, etc.

A website like OptinMonster has the goal of selling their lead generation software product, and they also have a blog where they educate readers about conversion  But they also have a blog with the goal of educating readers about conversion optimization and growing their businesses. You need to define what goals you wish to achieve with your website. This is very important

CHOOSE A DOMAIN NAME AND HOSTING PACKAGE

Like I earlier mentioned, wordpress.org is self-hosted software; this means that you will need to get your own hosting and domain name, then pay the fees, whether monthly or yearly, as the case may be. Many website owners often get confused with domain names and hosting. They are not the same. A domain name is the address you type in the search bar to locate your website or Uniform Resource Locator (URL), or simply the address of a webpage. For example , my domain name is davesratings.com, That is what visitors type into their browser to locate this website

On the other hand, WordPress hosting is where your website’s files actually live. It is just like the house of your website files. It is where all your website content is stored. My favorite Web hosting company is Qservers because of their good customer service and cheap domains and hosting packages. Every piece of information you need about Qservers is included inside the video training course above. Others Good hosting companies to consider as well includes Bluehost, Godaddy, Hostinger, etc. For more information on Bluehost, check out my post on Bluehost Review here

INSTALL WORDPRESS

If you registered your domain name and hosting on Qservers, you will need to log into your Cpanel and locate WordPress and install it . Details are available inside the video training above. Ensure you watch that training for better understanding
